POWER
POINTS, Inc. was founded in
1991 by former Denver
Post reporter Tim
McGovern, who continues to own
it today.
The
company began by sponsoring
the POWER POINTS Football
Contest in
Pennsylvania
.
In 2003, that game will
appear in 200-plus newspapers
in more than 15 states.
Along
the way, two other contests
were added:
SURVIVOR Football for
the college holiday bowl
season, and BRACKETBUCKS in
conjunction with the NCAA
Basketball Tournament,
otherwise known as March
Madness.
All told, nearly 400
newspapers now participate in
one or more of our contests.
Why?
For three reasons.
First,
our contests are excellent
tools for selling advertising.
Because they feature large
cash prizes ($1,000 in POWER
POINTS, $10,000 in SURVIVOR
Football, and $25,000 in
BRACKETBUCKS), they attract
lots of reader interest.
Typically, newspapers use
their co-sponsoring merchants
as drop-off points for entry
forms, thus pushing valuable
traffic into the stores.
In the past, newspapers
attempted to run their own
such contests – indeed, many
still do – but our clients
realize that by banding
together with other newspapers
and with each paying a modest
fee – they can create and
plug into something far bigger
and better than they could run
themselves.
Next,
because of this high reader
appeal, newspapers see
definite increases in
single-copy sales of
newspapers.
People get somewhat
addicted to our games, and
they go out and buy a copy of
the newspaper in order to
play.
Third,
we here at POWER POINTS do all
the scoring, tabulating and
reporting of results.
This takes a lot of
pain away from the
newspaper’s staff.
Newspapers simply
bundle up entries and
overnight them to
Denver
for scoring.
Contestants,
of course, play all of our
games for free.
Newspapers generate the
revenue they need to pay their
fee by selling advertising and
selling newspapers.
Please consult any of
our Testimonial pages to see
that newspapers are taking in
far more revenue on our games
than they are laying out in
fees.
They also enjoy the
good will our games provide
them, and many feel that our
contests play a definite
factor in a subscriber’s
annual or semi-annual decision
on whether to renew his or her
subscription.
